FCKL take 3rd place at 2018 Borneo Cup!

1 Oct 2018 | FC Kuala Lumpur, Match Reports

The FC Kuala Lumpur Under 11s recently travelled to Kota Kinabalu for the 2018 Borneo Invitational Cup. Facing teams from around Southeast Asia and Australia, they fought hard to pick up an amazing 3rd place!
Known as one of the region’s premier 11-a-side youth tournaments, the Borneo Invitational Cup is a boutique annual event which invites to Sabah the top junior teams from Asia and Australia. Previous winners have included teams from the Philippines, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Australia and South Korea – plus FC Kuala Lumpur’s Under 16s back in 2013!

This year, FCKL entered a younger team, with Coach Jon leading the Under 11s in their first ever 11-a-side tournament.

Kicking off with a friendly against Australian side St George City on Saturday 22 September, the team got off to a fantastic start with a 4–3 victory that set the tone for an excellent 3 days of football.

Drawn in a group with JP Voltes from the Philippines, and TABS Menggatal and MMT Junior from Sabah, FCKL had to finish in the top 2 places to progress to the semi-finals.

A 0-0 draw with JP Voltes meant a win in game 2 against MMT Junior was crucial – and that’s exactly what the boys delivered. The 3-1 victory filled the team with confidence going into the final group match where they beat TABS Menggatal 2-0 to secure their semi-final spot.

All that stood between FC Kuala Lumpur and the final at LIKAS Stadium was a match against Indonesian side Astam SS.

Unfortunately for the boys from KL it wasn’t to be this year, and a 2-1 loss meant they would head into the 3rd place play-off against the St George City team they’d beaten in a friendly 2 days earlier.

With the disappointment of a semi-final loss behind them, FCKL set out in the playoff to prove that they still had more to show. And playing on the pristine turf of the impressive LIKAS Stadium, they did exactly that taking a 3-2 victory to claim a very respectable 3rd place at the 2018 Borneo Invitational Cup.

From all of us here at Little League Soccer, congratulations to the FC Kuala Lumpur players, parents, coaches and support staff! We look forward to sharing more fantastic results on the regional and international stage in the future.
